LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE
I’ve gotten a lot of advice from a lot of people, as I’m sure you have too. The truth is – most of the advice I’ve received is absolutely terrible. Or, at minimum, not relevant to me in the given moment.
The 20th century was about our ability to access information.
But in the 21st century, it’s about the ability to sort out misinformation. There’s so much NOISE today, that it’s hard to listen to our inner voice. We’ve become so connected with the world around us, that we’ve become increasingly disconnected with ourselves.
Your inner voice does not scream – it whispers.
Everyone will tell you what you SHOULD do – but only you know what you MUST do.
If there’s too much NOISE, it’s nearly impossible to observe (or listen to) your intuition. You have a gut feeling on right and wrong. And, that gut feeling is usually right.
The truth is – there are some frameworks that can help us in any situation. Every time. Every place.
Success, happiness, or any other desirable emotion comes down to focusing on the highest yield activities – and that focus, over time, creates momentum.
Momentum is THE most addicting drug on the planet. Momentum is why the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the mediocre stay mediocre. That’s Newton’s law of physics – ‘An object in motion tends to stay in motion.’
Experts can tell you dozens of ways to engineer momentum.
- aggregation of marginal gains, (the compound effect, or the SNOWBALL effect).
- Remove the noise.
- Find a flow state (or your zone of genius).
- Only focus on 1 THING.
- Find the right mentor.
- Build relationships with the right people and surround yourself with them.
- Find the key performance indicator that’s the greatest measure of growth (or success).
And the reality is, all of these are good tid bits of advice. Momentum is a combination of all these attributes (and more).
But if we were to put momentum into a formula that we could use on a consistent basis – it would look like this.
Understanding where you are (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually) is the first step to any change.
Successful people are mindful of the moment DURING THE MOMENT. They know who they are, in relation to what’s happing around them, in relation to where they want to go. This sense of self-awareness helps people to identify the GAPS in their lives.
After all, it’s really difficult to build momentum in your life if you can’t be honest enough with yourself to realize you’re doing things that are holding you back.
If you’re a consultant, coach, or therapist, the first step is always some type of benchmarking. You need to understand where your client is, and where they want to go. If you don’t know where they’re at with their mind, body, and spirit, you can’t become a true change agent. This is a self-awareness process that you can go through on your own, with a friend, or with a client or vendor.
The Next Step
Once you are completely mindful of your current situation – you use your energy to get to that next step. Change only happens with high energy. If you’re looking to gain real momentum – you need high positive energy.
High negative energy will only hold you back. High positive energy will make you an unstoppable force.
Once again, that amount of energy takes a commitment – and committed people understand the power of decision.
They understanding that problem solving is a simple 2 step process:
- State the ultimate outcome
- Reverse engineer the solution to develop the first (or next) step.
Unsuccessful people get caught up in the details at the forefront (we’re all guilty of this at times). Successful people are self-aware of who they are, and use all their energy to propel themselves toward the first step. After you take the first step – you can reassess your situation, and put all your energy into the 2nd step – and so on. Success is a step by step process.
Mindset Shift: You have to be ready to take the next step right now.
If you always know what the next step is – stumbling upon success is inevitable.
